Afzal Ansary FRPS FBIPP FBPA DGPh HonFMPA
Afzal has worked all his professional life in Medical Scientific & Forensic Imaging. He is the principal author of the book entitled "A Colour Atlas of AIDS in the Tropics" which won the Lancet Award in 1990.
Afzal Ansary’s life long passion for photography started when he was just 11 years old. By the age of 14 years he was a proud owner of a Leica and a Rollieflex.
Afzal went on to study photography at the Regent Street Polytechnic, London (now University of Westminster). He trained in medical photography at the St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School (University of London). He is
Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography Honorary Fellow of the Master Photographers Association Emeritus Fellow of the Biological Photographic Association. He is a member of Deutsche Gessellschaft fur Photographie (DGPh)
He now enjoys photography - specialising in documentary, travel, editorial, environmental portraiture and nature photography. Afzal is particularly interested in photographing people in their daily working environment with available light. He has had two exhibitions one at the TouchStones Art Gallery in Rochdale and the second at the Fenton House Royal Photographic Society in Bath showing photographs on “People of Pakistan”. His images have been published worldwide in books, journals and newspapers, and other media. His images have also been used by the Discovery Channel, BBC and Channel 4.
Afzal believes “photography is an international visual language of excellence.” It allows for a depth of perception and emotions; images are universally appreciated and understood, whilst still being able to capture ‘factual details.’ Afzal’s is a holistic approach to photography, and he strives to capture the subtle interrelation of a land and her people.
Afzal is now semi-retired and lives in the North West of England. He is the North West Regional Organiser for the Royal Photographic Society which has about 750 members in the North West.
